TeslaUnread provides unread counting badges for the first New Launcher and WidgetLocker. It will not work with other desks or lockscreens.
Unread counts are natively supported for most popular chat and email apps, such as Hangouts, WhatsApp and all the apps shown in the screenshot.
Also on Android 4.3 + TeslaUnread can look at the notification bar to extract read digits from virtually any application.
