First, make sure you are on the roof (this will not work otherwise). You will be able to select the applications that will be paused when the screen turns off. Magic! You can also permanently disable / enable any service on your device. This is useful if you have services that tend to restart automatically and keep your device awake, or if you have games that send you endless notifications. There is also a feature to prevent applications from running in the background (do not force down or disable them) on your system.
