The Battle of Gettysburg took place from July 1 to 3, 1863, in Pennsylvania. The battle claimed the greatest number of victims in all battles of the entire war, and was the turning point in the American Civil War. For three days, General George Meade’s Potomac Army defeated General Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army, ending Confederate attempts to invade the North. The first day ended with the Confederate control of the city of Gettysburg, but they failed to gain height. The second day was a day of action at both ends of the battlefield at Culp’s Hill and Little Round Top. The third day ended with the Pickett’s Charge disaster.
